Banff, Alberta
Lace up. Switch on your headlamp. Run beneath the Rockies.
Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 7:00 PM
Join a moving river of light for five unforgettable miles through Banff. Feel the energy of the start, settle into your stride beneath the Rockies, and carry that momentum all the way to a warm, welcoming finish at the Rundlestone Lodge.
The Night Starts Moving
Winterstart is built around the simple thrill of running together after sunset. It combines the focus of a road race with the energy of a community celebration, all framed by Banff's mountain landscape and a field of runners lighting the route ahead.
The evening begins with nervous energy, cold mountain air, and the soft glow of headlamps gathering at the start. Then the signal sounds, shoes strike the pavement, and Banff Avenue becomes a flowing ribbon of runners. For 38 years, Winterstart has turned five miles after dark into a shared experience built on movement, resilience, creativity, and community.

Know Before You Go
Review the course, safety requirements, timing instructions, race kit pickup options, awards, parking, and park rules before arriving in Banff.
The race begins and finishes in front of the Rundlestone Lodge at 537 Banff Avenue. The five-mile out-and-back route follows Banff Avenue and Tunnel Mountain Road, offering a unique nighttime course framed by the Canadian Rockies. The race starts promptly at 7:00 PM on Saturday, November 7, 2026. After finishing, participants are invited to enjoy refreshments, awards, and draw prizes in the lodge parkade. You must be present to receive a draw prize.
Runners must remain on the designated south portion of the roadway for the entire course. The Legacy Pathway is not part of the permitted route and must not be used. Remember, THE ROAD IS STILL OPEN TO TRAFFIC, including vehicles travelling at highway speeds. Follow marshal instructions, stay within the marked course, and never cut corners.
Reflective signs, flashers, and traffic-control equipment will mark the course. Stay to the RIGHT of this equipment while travelling out and to the LEFT on the return. Flashing devices can be difficult to see between pulses, so remain alert. A bright headlamp and visible clothing are strongly recommended.
The race uses the single-use ChronoTrack B-Tag timing system. Your tag is attached to the back of your race bib and must remain flat, visible, and unobstructed for reliable detection at the timing mats.
We strongly recommend collecting your race kit in advance at The Tech Shop in Calgary on Thursday, November 5, 2026 and Friday, November 6, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Race-day pickup is also available at The Rundlestone Lodge in Banff on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Choosing Calgary pickup reduces race-day lineups, gives you more time to prepare, and provides the best chance of receiving your requested shirt size while inventory is available.
Winterstart takes place after dark, and portions of the route outside the Banff townsite have no street lighting. Every participant should make visibility a priority. Glow sticks will not be provided, so bring a dependable headlamp and consider reflective gear, fluorescent clothing, illuminated accessories, or battery-powered lights. Creative outfits are welcome when they remain safe and do not obstruct your bib.
Course marshals are positioned throughout the route wearing red reflective vests and carrying flashlights. They maintain radio contact with the event team and can request medical support when needed. If you are injured, unwell, disoriented, or concerned about another runner, stop and speak with the nearest marshal. Trained medical personnel will be available along the course and at the finish area.
Awards are presented to the first, second, and third overall finishers in both the men's and women's divisions, as well as the top three finishers in each age category. The post-race ceremony also includes random draw prizes, giving every participant another reason to stay, celebrate, and connect with the Winterstart community.
Banff Winterstart takes place within Banff National Park under specific event permit conditions. Every participant must have a valid park pass and must respect the environment, wildlife, other visitors, and all directions from event officials. Please plan ahead and review current pass options and visitor information on the Parks Canada website.
Participants and spectators must follow all Town of Banff bylaws, posted restrictions, and parking time limits. Banff can be busy on event weekends, so arrive early, allow time to walk from your parking location, and check Banff Parking for current availability before heading to the start area.
Wildlife can be highly sensitive to human activity, especially after dark. At Parks Canada's request, NO DOGS are permitted at the race. Never approach or feed wildlife, remain on the designated route, and follow instructions from marshals or park staff. Review current wildlife guidance on the Parks Canada website.
